Calling all Entries for the Wild About Wooli ArtShow 2023!

The Wooli Artists Gathering (WAG) has reconvened to make preparations for the Wild About Wooli ArtShow for 2023. We saw the exhibition growing in size and popularity in 2022 with a record number of entries and artists and now seek to invite all to enter the 2023 exhibition.

Opening Night is Friday 7th April 2023 at 6.30pm at the Wooli Community Hall. The exhibition continues over the Easter weekend opening on Saturday, Sunday and in 2023 will extend to include Monday 10th April, from 10.00am to 3.00pm.

We have once again booked the Wooli Community Hall, located adjacent the Tennis Courts, and opposite the Wooli Bowls Club.

It is a great space centrally located in the village.

The theme of the Wild About Wooli ArtShow in 2023 is “WHAT ARE YOU WILD ABOUT”.

Entrance Categories, Conditions and Prizes are listed in Attachment A – Artist Agreement & Attachment B – Entry Form.

WAG formed in November 2010 by a group of local artists and those who have an interest in art. The beauty and unique location of Wooli and its surrounding area has attracted many artists and stimulated people to develop their artistic talents. Before this time the growing collection of artistswere seeking opportunity to gather, discuss, collaborate and support artistic endeavours. The ArtShow now provides a platform to exhibit their artwork and connect with the wider art community and the general public.

For those interested in joining our group please get in touch. This is a great opportunity to be part of a local event welcoming regulars and visitors to Wooli alike.

Prompted by WAG members and the Protect Wooli campaign, the Wild About Wooli ArtShow is seen to be a positive way to bring attention to the talents of our local artists. Proceeds from sales at the event financially support individual artists activities, whilst also providing a donation of 20% of sale proceeds to the activities of Coastal Communities Protect Alliance – Wooli, (CCPA). Primarily these funds go towards the protection of our coastal dune system. For more information regarding CCPA visit www.protectwooli.com.au

of art, or a member of our community interested in organizing the event from behind the scenes, there is a place for you to be involved. Professional and amateur artists alike are welcome to exhibit. The Wooli School children also display their work. The Youth Category offers incentive for our emerging artists.

There are various prizes to be awarded including Best of Show; Highly Commended for each 6 categories, Painting; Drawing/Print Making; Sculpture/Ceramics; Textile Art; Photography; and Mixed Media, the Youth Category Award, and School Children’s Prize category. The People’s Choice Award is decided by popular vote and is announced at the close of the show.

WAG TIME AGAIN….FOR THE 10TH YEAR!

The Wooli Artists Gathering (WAG) is again holding the Wild About Wooli Art Show.

WAG, which was formed in November 2010, is composed of people connected with Wooli who are artists, or have an interest in art. The beauty and unique location of Wooli and its surrounding area have attracted many artists and stimulated people to develop their artistic talents. However this growing collection of artists remained largely invisible.

Prompted by the Protect Wooli campaign, it was thought important to draw positive attention to the value of Wooli, by collecting and widely
promoting Wooli ‘s artist community. Those who attend meetings and express interest in the Gathering ‘s aims are members.

There is no membership charge or criteria, except for involvement or interest in artistic endeavours. The exhibition has been held every year since 2011.

 

The 2020 Wild About Wooli Art Show will present exhibits of regional artists including painting, drawing & print making, textile art, sculpture & ceramics, photography.

Our Picture Hanging Solutions are purchased from Shakespeare Solutions. Ian Rees has once again generously provided the venue for the show at the Wooli Hotel Motel.

Our thanks to Marc McIntyre and Steve Pickering from Coldstream Gallery, Ulmarra for judging the 2020 entries.

 

It opens with a cocktail party on Friday 10th of April 2020 at 6.30pm and continues on Saturday 11th, from 10.00am to 3.00pm and Sunday 12th of April, 11.00am to 2.00pm.

Professionals and amateurs alike are welcome to exhibit – artists, photographers and those who like to experiment with other media. Children’s works will also be displayed, so get painting, kids.

A People‘s Choice prize will be awarded and there are prizes for various categories. Last year’s exhibition was another resounding success and many sales were made.

Next Steps to Protect Wooli

Wooli’s first beach scraping project is complete and so far looks like a resounding success. Not only was it finished within budget and on time, but it also added 40% more sand to the dunes than was expected. The low tide area of the beach recovered very quickly and no environmental or heritage damage was done. In addition, new sand-traps were installed and the first stage of replanting completed (see photo). The most at-risk part of the village, the southernmost 800 metres, is now well protected from the next 1-in-20-years storm.

 

But the question remains, “what about even bigger storms”?

Our most recent expert advice, the Coastal Zone Management Plan (CZMP) 2018, recommends the at-risk dunes be nourished with 60,000 cubic metres of sand to provide the best protection from a 1-in-50-years storm. The CZMP also recommends this sand be sourced from the Wilsons Headland end of the beach supplemented by further local beach scraping. Council is continuing to progress the CZMP through various state government departments, Native Title and its own budget process. However, we should expect that to secure the necessary funding ($2m) and licences to implement the Wilsons Headland Nourishment project will take years, not months, to achieve.

 

In the meantime, an interim solution could well be a second Beach Scraping Project.

This would add enough sand for the dune to withstand a 1-in-30-years storm and would get us 50% of the way to the target of 60,000 cubic metres described above.

Repeated scraping has several major advantages: it has a history of success (New Brighton has done 3 now), is relatively inexpensive compared to Nourishment, involves no major licensing issues and is rapidly achievable. It could be completed by mid-2020 if we start preparing now.

We suggest this approach:

1.  CCPA to write to Council proposing a second beach scraping project to be completed in 2020 and funded as per the first project, ie. $50,000 from the State government and $25,000 each from CCPA and Council.

2. CCPA to commence raising $25,000 as soon possible, subject to positive feedback from Council and State.
